Shoulder Replacement

Shoulder Replacement Surgeon in Surat

Shoulder replacement at Vedaant Orthopaedic Center, Surat — total, reverse, partial and revision procedures, chosen according to the state of the rotator cuff.

In short: Shoulder replacement resurfaces a worn or damaged shoulder joint. Which type you need depends less on the arthritis and more on whether your rotator cuff still works: an intact cuff allows a standard total replacement, while a failed cuff calls for a reverse replacement, in which the ball and socket are swapped over.

Is this you?

  • Deep shoulder pain that has become constant rather than activity-related
  • Grinding or crunching when the arm is moved
  • Movement that has reduced gradually over months or years
  • Night pain that wakes you and makes sleeping on that side impossible
  • Difficulty with dressing, washing hair, or reaching a shelf
  • A shoulder that has never recovered from an old fracture or dislocation

The cuff decides the operation

This is the single most important idea on this page, and it is what makes shoulder replacement different from hip and knee replacement.

A normal shoulder relies on the rotator cuff to hold the ball centred in its shallow socket while the deltoid muscle lifts the arm. A standard total shoulder replacement reproduces the joint’s normal anatomy — and therefore depends on that cuff still working. If the cuff is torn beyond repair, a standard replacement will simply ride upwards and fail.

A reverse replacement solves that by inverting the geometry: the ball is fixed to the socket side and the cup to the arm side. That change moves the mechanical pivot and lets the deltoid lift the arm on its own, without needing a cuff. It is one of the more elegant solutions in joint surgery, and it is why an assessment of the cuff comes before any discussion of implants.

What causes shoulder damage

  • Osteoarthritis — wear of the joint surface, with progressive stiffness.
  • Cuff tear arthropathy — arthritis that develops after a long-standing massive rotator cuff tear.
  • Rheumatoid and inflammatory arthritis, affecting the joint lining.
  • Avascular necrosis of the humeral head.
  • Post-traumatic arthritis after a fracture that healed imperfectly.

A guide only. The decision follows examination and imaging, particularly the condition of the rotator cuff.

Before replacement is considered

Shoulder replacement is a bigger step than many patients expect, and there are useful options short of it: physiotherapy targeted at the cuff and shoulder blade muscles, injection to settle inflammation, activity modification, and in some cases arthroscopic surgery to address impingement or a repairable cuff tear. Replacement is reserved for joints where the surface is genuinely worn out and those measures have been exhausted.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a total and a reverse shoulder replacement?

A total replacement keeps the normal anatomy and needs a working rotator cuff. A reverse replacement swaps the ball and socket positions so the deltoid muscle can lift the arm without a cuff. The state of your cuff decides which is appropriate.

How much movement will I get back?

Most patients gain substantial pain relief and useful function. Overhead reach usually improves; rotation — reaching behind the back — often improves less, particularly after a reverse replacement.

Is shoulder replacement as reliable as hip or knee replacement?

It is highly effective for pain relief, which is usually the main complaint. Functional gains are more variable than at the hip, largely because the shoulder depends on surrounding muscle and tendon quality rather than bone alone.

How long is recovery?

A sling for several weeks, then guided movement, then strengthening. Useful function usually returns over three to six months, with improvement continuing towards a year.

Can I sleep on that side afterwards?

Not in the early weeks. Most patients sleep propped up or on the opposite side at first, and return to lying on the operated shoulder once the tissues have healed and comfort allows.
