Hip Replacement
Daycare Hip Replacement in Surat
Fast-track hip replacement at Vedaant Orthopaedic Center, Surat — same-day or next-day discharge for suitable patients.
In short: Fast-track hip replacement organises anaesthesia, pain relief and rehabilitation so that suitable patients walk within hours and return home the same day or the next. The hip lends itself to this better than the knee, because early comfort and walking are generally more predictable after hip surgery.
Why the hip suits fast-track
Hip and knee replacement are often discussed together, but they behave quite differently in the first days.
After a hip replacement, many patients notice the arthritic pain has simply gone, replaced by surgical soreness that settles steadily. Walking is usually possible on the day. There is no equivalent of the knee’s swelling and stiffness battle, and no comparable struggle to regain bend.
That difference is why day-case hip replacement has become established practice in suitable patients. It is not a compromise; for the right person it is a better experience, with less disruption and less exposure to hospital-acquired infection.
What makes it work
- Anaesthesia chosen for rapid return of leg control, so standing is safe within hours.
- Local anaesthetic infiltration around the joint during surgery, reducing early pain.
- Opioid-sparing pain relief, avoiding the drowsiness and nausea that delay walking.
- Blood-conserving medication so you are not weakened by anaemia.
- Physiotherapy on the day of surgery, including practising stairs if you have them.
- Preparation done beforehand — exercises taught, home arranged, expectations set.
Who is suitable
- Good general health without significant cardiac or respiratory disease
- Acceptable haemoglobin before surgery
- Straightforward primary hip replacement, not revision
- Reasonable pre-operative mobility
- A responsible adult at home for the first days
- Living within reasonable distance of the clinic
Patients with sleep apnoea, uncontrolled diabetes, anaemia, complex hip anatomy, or no support at home are better served by a standard admission. So are those having revision surgery or bilateral hips in one sitting.

Going home safely
Discharge is decided against criteria rather than a timetable. You go home when you can walk safely with your aid, get on and off a bed and chair independently, manage stairs if you have them, have pain controlled on tablets, and can pass urine normally.
You leave with written instructions, medication including anything prescribed for clot prevention, hip precautions explained, an early follow-up appointment, and a number to call. The clinic being open seven days makes that last point practical rather than theoretical.
Hip precautions at home
The specific precautions depend on the surgical approach used, and you will be given yours. Common early instructions include avoiding bending the hip beyond ninety degrees, not crossing the legs, and not twisting on the operated leg. A raised seat and a firm chair with arms make the first weeks considerably easier, and both are worth arranging before surgery rather than after.
When to call
- Fever, or a wound becoming hot, red or discharging
- Calf pain or swelling, breathlessness or chest pain
- A sudden change in leg length, or inability to bear weight — which may indicate dislocation
- Pain not controlled by the medication provided
- New numbness or weakness in the leg
Frequently asked questions
Is day-case hip replacement really possible?
Yes, for carefully selected patients. It is established practice internationally and depends on selection, modern anaesthesia and pain control, and reliable support at home.
Is the operation different?
No. The implant and the surgery are the same. What differs is the anaesthetic technique, pain management and how rehabilitation is organised.
What if I cannot walk well enough to go home?
You stay. Discharge is assessed against safety criteria on the day, and staying an additional night is a planned-for outcome rather than a problem.
Are hip precautions different on a fast-track pathway?
No. They depend on the surgical approach, not on how long you stay in hospital. You will be given instructions specific to your surgery.
Is it cheaper?
Generally somewhat, because the stay is shorter. Implant and theatre costs are unchanged.
Can I have a fast-track revision hip replacement?
No. Revision surgery involves longer operating time, greater blood loss and often restricted weight-bearing afterwards, all of which require a standard admission.
