Orthopaedic Surgery FAQs — Surat
Common questions about joint pain, knee and hip replacement, recovery and costs, answered by an orthopaedic surgeon in Surat.
In short: Most questions patients ask fall into four groups: when to see a surgeon, whether surgery is really needed, what recovery involves, and what it will cost. The answers below cover each in turn, and none of them replace an assessment of your own joint.
When to see an orthopaedic surgeon
When should I see an orthopaedic surgeon rather than wait?
If joint pain has lasted more than a few weeks, wakes you at night, limits walking or stairs, follows an injury, or comes with swelling, locking or giving way. Sudden inability to bear weight, obvious deformity, or numbness beyond an injury should be seen the same day.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can call the clinic directly. Bring any previous imaging and a list of your medication.
My knee hurts but my doctor says it is my hip. Is that possible?
Yes, and it is common. The hip and knee share nerve supply, so hip arthritis frequently refers pain to the thigh and knee. Examining hip movement usually settles it quickly.
Should I get an MRI before my appointment?
Not usually. Examination often gives the diagnosis and determines which scan, if any, will change the plan. Unnecessary scans can also confuse things by showing findings that are not causing symptoms.
Do I actually need surgery?
Will I be pushed towards an operation?
No. A large share of orthopaedic consultations end without any surgical plan. Surgery is discussed when medication, injection, physiotherapy and activity change have genuinely been tried, or when joint damage is advanced enough that they will not help.
What happens if I do nothing?
For many conditions, waiting costs nothing and is a legitimate choice. The exceptions where delay narrows options are infection, some fractures, avascular necrosis before the bone collapses, and joints that repeatedly dislocate. You will be told if yours is one of those.
Is there an ideal age for joint replacement?
No fixed age. Implants have a finite service life, so very early replacement may mean revision later. Delaying too long allows deformity and muscle loss that make recovery harder. The balance is judged case by case.
Can I get a second opinion?
Yes, and it is entirely reasonable before major surgery. Bring your imaging and reports so the second opinion is based on the same information.
Surgery and recovery
How long does joint replacement recovery take?
Most people manage daily activities comfortably by around three months, with improvement continuing for six to twelve. Hip replacement recovery is generally quicker and more predictable than knee.
How long will I be in hospital?
Commonly a few days for a standard admission. Selected patients on a fast-track pathway go home the same day or the next.
How long do joint replacements last?
Most modern knee and hip implants remain functional well beyond fifteen years. Age at surgery, body weight and activity level all influence this.
Will I be able to sit cross-legged or squat?
Many patients regain good movement, but deep squatting and floor-sitting cannot be guaranteed after knee replacement, and deep hip flexion is restricted early after hip replacement. Raise this specifically if it matters in your household.
How important is physiotherapy?
It is usually the difference between a good result and an average one. The operation restores the structure; rehabilitation restores the function.
When can I drive again?
Once you can control the pedals and perform an emergency stop without hesitation and are off strong painkillers. Usually sooner for a left-side operation in a manual car.
Risks and problems
What are the main risks of joint replacement?
Infection, blood clots, stiffness, implant loosening over time, and less commonly nerve injury or dislocation. Each is uncommon, and specific steps are taken to reduce all of them. Your individual risk is discussed before surgery.
What symptoms need urgent attention after surgery?
Fever or a wound that becomes hot, red or discharging; calf pain or swelling; sudden breathlessness or chest pain; pain that suddenly worsens; or inability to bear weight when you previously could.
Do I need antibiotics before dental treatment?
Tell your dentist you have a joint replacement and discuss it. Bacteria from dental procedures can settle on an implant through the bloodstream, and cover is considered particularly for invasive work.
Cost and practicalities
What does joint replacement cost?
It depends on the implant, whether one or both joints are done, length of stay, anaesthesia and physiotherapy needs. A meaningful estimate follows assessment rather than preceding it.
Is surgery covered by insurance?
Joint replacement is covered by most health insurance policies in India, subject to waiting periods and policy terms. The clinic can advise on documentation and whether cashless treatment applies.
Is the clinic open on Sunday?
Yes, on Sunday mornings from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, in addition to Monday to Saturday, 10:00 am to 8:00 pm.
