Patient Guide
Patient Guide — Orthopaedic Care in Surat
What to expect at each stage, from your first consultation through surgery and recovery at Vedaant Orthopaedic Center.
In short: Most orthopaedic journeys follow the same four stages: assessment and diagnosis, a trial of non-surgical treatment, surgery where that has not worked, then rehabilitation. Knowing what each stage involves — and what it asks of you — makes the process considerably less daunting.
The stages
Your first visit
History, examination, imaging and a plan. What to bring, and the questions worth asking.
Before surgery
Tests, medication adjustments, fasting, and preparing your home for the weeks afterwards.
After surgery & recovery
Walking, wound care, physiotherapy, follow-up and returning to normal activity.
Insurance & payment
What affects cost, and how insurance and cashless arrangements work.
The part patients underestimate
Almost everyone arriving for joint surgery focuses on the operation. In practice, the operation is the most predictable part of the process. It happens on a known day, takes a known time, and is done by someone who has done it many times before.
What varies between patients — and what actually determines the result — is the rehabilitation. Two people can have technically identical knee replacements and end up months apart in function, because one did the exercises consistently and the other did not.
This is worth knowing early, because it changes how you prepare. Arriving for surgery stronger, lighter and with a plan for support at home is not a formality; it measurably affects how the recovery goes.
What you can do before any operation
- Stop smoking. It impairs wound and bone healing and raises infection and non-union risk. The single most impactful change available.
- Get your diabetes controlled. Poor control before surgery raises infection risk substantially.
- Deal with dental problems. Bacteria from a dental infection can seed a new implant through the bloodstream.
- Build strength in advance. Muscle built before surgery is muscle you do not have to rebuild afterwards.
- Plan your home. A raised seat, a clear route to the bathroom, and someone available for the first days.
- Lose weight where you can. Load through the knee is several times body weight, and less of it helps both surgery and recovery.

When to seek help urgently
After any orthopaedic surgery, contact the clinic promptly rather than waiting for your next appointment if you experience:
- Fever, or a wound that becomes hot, red or begins discharging
- Calf pain or swelling, or sudden breathlessness or chest pain
- Pain that suddenly worsens rather than gradually improving
- A joint that gives way, dislocates, or makes a sudden change in sensation
- New numbness or weakness in the limb
- Inability to bear weight when you previously could
These are uncommon, but each is easier to treat early. Nobody at the clinic minds being called about something that turns out to be nothing.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the whole process usually take?
Diagnosis is typically a single visit. A trial of non-surgical treatment usually runs over weeks to a few months. If surgery follows, most of the recovery happens over three to six months, with improvement continuing beyond that.
Will I definitely need surgery?
No. A large share of orthopaedic problems are managed without an operation. Surgery is discussed when non-surgical options have genuinely been tried or when joint damage is advanced.
How important is physiotherapy?
It is usually the difference between a good result and a mediocre one, particularly after joint replacement and ligament surgery. The operation restores the structure; rehabilitation restores the function.
Can I have a second opinion?
Yes, and it is entirely reasonable before major surgery. Bring your imaging and reports so the second opinion is based on the same information.
What if I want to wait?
Waiting is often a legitimate choice, and for many conditions it costs nothing. There are exceptions — infection, some fractures and avascular necrosis before collapse — where delay narrows the options, and you will be told if yours is one.
